The Elm City String Quartet Plays: Greer, Turina, & Debussy

  • May 8 2026, 7:30pm - 9:30pm
$15 - $30

This concert celebrates composers finding and defining their own voices. We begin with the premiere of a new string quartet written especially for us by Fredericton-based composer, Zachary Greer. Working directly with Zach to shape this piece has been a joy, and we’re excited to share the result of this collaboration with you.

Joaquín Turina’s La Oración del Torero (The Bullfighter’s Prayer) was composed after he returned to Spain from his studies in Paris, blending Sevillian folk song with French Impressionism. The program closes with Debussy’s monumental String Quartet. Written when he was only 31, the quartet was his first important work – one where he radically broke away from the established styles of 19th century Romantic music, coining a new sound that focused on beauty, harmonic colour and compositional freedom.
