For some, visiting Kings Landing during Maple, the First Taste of Spring is an annual tradition. For others, it’s their first time experiencing the wonder of time travel at this Fredericton Region gem. Kings Landing has celebrated New Brunswick’s maple season and history for 40 years. It’s never too late to join in the fun and make memories for yourself!
Here are seven memories you can make when you visit Kings Landing for Maple, the First Taste of Spring.
1. Savour maple candy on the snow
Appropriately named a “long-lick,” maple candy on the snow is a highlight of this event. Watch as a villager pours the warm syrup onto the cold snow and roll it up on a stick for a delectable, sticky treat. They might let you roll it yourself! Visitors can purchase long-licks onsite for $2.50.
2. Visit villagers in a historical home
Three of the historical homes will be open during Maple, the First Taste of Spring. Visit the Hagerman, Joslin and Gordon households to learn about winter in the 19th century and chat with the friendly villagers.

3.See an encampment in the woods
Collecting sap from maple trees in the 19th century was quite the endeavour. It often involved the whole family and spending several days or weeks in the woods. Be sure to grab a map and head to the wooded area near the Joslin Farm to see this encampment and outdoor cooking demonstration.
4. Eat breakfast in support of Shriners
What better way to enjoy maple syrup than with pancakes? The Luxor Shriners of New Brunswick will sell pancake breakfasts with eggs, meat, home fries and beverages. Proceeds will support the Luxor Patient Transportation Fund. Breakfast tickets can be purchased from the Shriners. Sales end at 2 p.m., so make sure to enjoy this delicious opportunity to start the day!
5. Shop for souvenirs at the Peddler’s Market
The Peddler’s Market will be open with maple products, handmade souvenirs, and other yummy treats for sale. Find this gift shop in the Welcome Centre and bring home something special.

6. Hop on a horse & wagon ride
A staple of most trips in Kings Landing’s village, the horse and wagon rides will be available for visitors during Maple, the First Taste of Spring. Hop on for a quick ride from one spot to the next or take a full ride of the west side. Wagon rides are included in the price of admission.
7. Walk through the west side
Half of Kings Landing’s 19th-century village will be open for guests to take a stroll surrounded by lovely scenery. Be sure to check the weather before coming so you dress appropriately and wear the proper footwear. Take plenty of pictures and enjoy the fresh air!
