Oakley Rain Wysote Gray is from the Listuguj Mi’gmaq First Nation. She identifies as Trans Two-Spirit and uses she/her pronouns. As a Mi’gmaq couturier, Oakley’s work spans both the historical replication of Mi’gmaq artifacts and culturally relevant couture pieces. Her latest collection, Mesiatl (infected), highlights the stories of her ancestors while showcasing the impact of systemic racism and colonization. During her residency, she will create a half-scale garment incorporating insights from her research on historical artifacts and haute couture pieces. The stages she plans to showcase at The Beaverbrook include pattern drafting, mock-ups and samples, and the creation of the final garment. She has already started work on the base of the dress and will focus on the copper component of the outfit during the residency.
