Founded in 2020 by Carla Bonnell and Rick Barlett, Engage began as a collaborative songwriting project rooted in musical exploration. As the vision expanded, so did the lineup. The addition of Greg Mansfield of Rusagonis in 2024 brought a dynamic percussive style and a deep connection to his Mi’kmaq heritage, adding rich texture and cultural depth to the band’s sound. Soon after, Vernon Daigle of Minto joined following a chance meeting at the Minto Gazebo, reigniting his return to serious band work and helping shape a sound that is distinctly Engage.
In 2023, the band released their debut album, The Time Has Come, earning a Bronze award for Band Album of the Year at the ISSA Music Awards. Their follow-up, Master Plan: Side “EH”, brought even greater recognition, including six finalist nominations at the 2025 ISSA Awards and a Josie Music Award nomination in Nashville.
Individually accomplished, Rick is a former member of the Howard Brook Band and has worked with YES bassist Billy Sherwood, while Carla’s 2014 debut The Liberator reached Canada’s Earshot Top 10 and led to her induction into the Minto Country Music Wall of Fame. Together, Engage delivers a compelling folk-rock and folk-country experience grounded in authentic storytelling. Carla is being inducted into the New Brunswick Country Music Hall of Fame in the fall of 2026 along side of Julian Austing, Lee Marlow, Terry Patterson and Steve Maillet.
